Shibuya rewards a guide more than almost anywhere else in Tokyo, because so little of it explains itself. The crossing is famous, the dog statue is famous, and the streets behind them are a dense grid of bars, record shops and restaurants that most visitors walk past without knowing which door is worth opening.
This ninety-minute walk starts at the Hachiko statue on Dogenzaka, where the guide tells the story properly — an Akita who kept returning to the station for nearly ten years after his owner died there in 1925, and why a nation attached itself to it. From there you cross the Shibuya Scramble on foot, which is the only way to understand the scale of it: several thousand people at a time, moving in every direction, with no collisions and no shouting.
The rest of the walk goes behind the shopfronts. You pass through the neon-lit restaurant and bar lanes that are dead at noon and unrecognisable after dark, and the guide points out the practical things — which alleys are worth returning to for dinner, where the standing bars are, which of the department stores has the food hall worth a detour. It ends at a viewpoint over the crossing that is free to reach and known mostly to people who live here, rather than the paid observation decks.
At this price it is deliberately no-frills. There is no food, no transport and no ticket included; you are paying for ninety minutes of a local's knowledge and a route you would not assemble yourself. Groups can run up to fifty, so it is a walk-and-listen rather than a conversation. It runs rain or shine, and the route is wheelchair accessible. Most people take it early in their trip and use the recommendations for the rest of the week.
