Full description

Shinjuku is not a difficult place to eat badly. The lanes around the station carry an enormous number of restaurants, a large share of them with photographs in the window and English menus outside, and the ones that are genuinely good rarely advertise themselves in a way a visitor can read. This three-hour walk solves that by handing the decisions to someone who eats here.

The group is capped at twelve, which matters more than it sounds — the places on this route are small, and a coach party could not physically get through them. You visit four in an evening, and they are deliberately different from each other: a stall, an izakaya, a traditional eatery and a gastrobar, so the tour covers a range of formats rather than four variations on the same meal.

Thirteen dishes are included across the four stops. The exact line-up moves with the season and with what each kitchen is doing well, but it typically runs through sashimi, tonkatsu, yakitori and takoyaki, alongside sake. Two drinks are included and you can take them alcoholic or not. Between stops the guide fills in the context — why an izakaya works the way it does, how to order without a menu, what the etiquette actually is around pouring and sharing.

The practical value tends to outlast the evening. Guides here spend a good part of the walk answering questions about the rest of your trip, and most groups leave with a short list of places to go back to on their own. Meeting is outside a landmark building in Nishi-Shinjuku, a few minutes from the station's west exit, and the tour finishes within walking distance of the same transport.

It suits confident eaters and cautious ones equally; portions are shared and nobody is pushed into anything. Tell the operator about dietary requirements when you book, since substitutions are much easier to arrange in advance than on the night.

Elena was fantastic. We got to experience several bits and pieces from several corners of Shinjuku and discover items we wouldn’t have usually ordered.

My sister & I had the best time on this food tour! We are so glad we did it at the beginning of our Japan adventure. We got to explore so many cool spots in Tokyo and try so many unique and delicious foods that we otherwise would have missed out on. It was worth every penny. I can’t say enough about how amazing Naomi was as our tour guide. She made us feel so comfortable and looked after and added so much to our experience! She was extremely knowledgeable, personable and fun to be around. If you are looking for good food, sight seeing and a great time, definitely book this tour - such a stand out experience!

Naomi was our guide and she did a fantastic job. She did not let a rainy evening stand in the way of ensuring everyone had a fun and engaged experience. She has a great personality for giving tours and we had a wonderful experience visiting/eating at locations we likely would not have otherwise. Thanks for a fun night!

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or late October to early December for autumn colour and the clearest skies. Contrary to most advice, October is Tokyo's wettest month (234.8 mm), not the June rainy season. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Tokyo guide.
Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card and budget ¥1,000–¥1,400 a day. Do not buy a JR Pass for a Tokyo-only trip — it costs ¥50,000 and excludes Tokyo Metro and Toei entirely. Note JR East raised Tokyo fares on 14 March 2026, so Metro is now cheaper than JR on several routes. See getting around Tokyo.
Shibuya Sky releases tickets only 14 days ahead at 00:00 JST — it cannot be booked months in advance. teamLab Borderless tickets drop at 12:00 JST on the 1st of each month. Our 3-day Tokyo itinerary lists every booking deadline.
Yes — a Japanese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. 1968 Vienna Convention permits are not valid in Japan. Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan need an official JAF translation instead. Arrange it before you fly; see the Tokyo go-kart guide.
Yes — the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko takes about 1h 45m for ¥2,200. But manage expectations: Fuji is visible on 84% of December mornings and only 23% of July mornings, and cloud builds through the day, so go early. Details in our Mount Fuji day trip guide.
Edomae sushi (the Tokyo Bay style, where curing began as a workaround for having no refrigeration), monjayaki — a runny griddle dish unique to Tokyo with 80+ specialists on Tsukishima's Monja Street — and soba. Also worth knowing: Tsukiji Outer Market never closed; only the wholesale auction moved to Toyosu. See the Tokyo food guide.
The crossing itself takes about ninety seconds. What makes it worth an evening is one street back — Nonbei Yokocho, a lantern-lit alley of tiny bars a minute away that almost nobody who photographs the scramble walks into. Note street drinking is banned in the area 18:00–05:00 year-round, though the ordinance carries no fine. See the Shibuya Crossing guide.
Yes, some. Japan's cashless ratio reached 58% in 2025, so over 40% of payments are still cash — and card refusal is most likely at small independent izakaya, ramen ticket machines and market stalls. Tipping is not expected anywhere.
