Full description

The yakatabune is a low wooden-style houseboat with tatami seating and paper lanterns along the eaves, and it has been carrying people around Tokyo's waterways for about four hundred years. It started as an aristocratic indulgence in the Edo period, became a merchant-class one, and survives now as one of the few genuinely old Tokyo experiences that is neither a museum nor a reconstruction.

The boat leaves from Etchujima Pier in Koto City and turns down Tokyo Bay towards Odaiba. You sit at low tables while dinner is served: beef sukiyaki cooked at the table, which is exactly the right food for the setting — hot, communal and slow. Soft drinks are unlimited, and a summer package swaps that for free-flow alcoholic drinks if you would rather.

Part-way through, a musician plays shamisen live in the cabin. The three-stringed instrument carries in a small wooden space in a way it never does through speakers, and it is the moment most people remember afterwards.

The route passes under the Rainbow Bridge and along the Odaiba waterfront, which is the best angle on this part of the city — the towers on one side, the bridge lit above you, and the water flattening the noise of Tokyo out completely. Windows open on most of the route for photographs.

Two things worth knowing. There is no hotel pickup, and Etchujima is a short taxi or a walk from Monzen-Nakacho station rather than somewhere you will pass by accident, so allow time. And if you want the Tokyo Tower observation deck as well, take the option that bundles it — it is cheaper than buying the deck ticket separately afterwards. The boat takes up to forty and is wheelchair accessible.

Really good time on Tokyo Bay! We booked this cruise and absolutely loved it. It was incredibly fun from start to finish. The traditional entertainment was a blast and kept everyone smiling, and the sukiyaki dinner was delicious. Getting to see the city lights and the Rainbow Bridge from the water made it even more special. Highly recommend!

This was so much fun! The guide was amazing and very kind. We had a very small cruise (only 3 people) and Christine made it immersive and fun. The tour was informative, and the food was delicious. Midori's music was incredible and it was great to be able to sing and dance along! Definitely recommend!

We had such a wonderful experience on the Tokyo boat cruise! The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. They did a great job explaining the different attractions we saw along the way, including the meanings and symbols behind the landmarks, which made the experience even more interesting and memorable. The performances were also really enjoyable and added a special touch to the cruise. The dinner was delicious, and overall, everything was very well organized. We truly enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend this cruise to anyone looking for a fun and memorable way to see Tokyo!

Amazing, the dinner was amazing, just a warning to everyone it’s a lot of delicious food so don’t eat anything at noon so you can enjoy and eat everything.

It was a wow experience for me and my daughter. The welcoming Karen( guide) was so lovely and friendly. She was giving a knowledgeable information about traditions and a bit of history which was very helpful and Karen was guiding us and helping taking lovely pictures. The Sakura decorations on the boat were really giving that warm feeling. The entertainment Midori was great taken us into the Japanese atmosphere. The food was good experience to cook and it was yummy. Overall it was an excellent trip and we would definitely recommend it to others. Thank you to everyone who made this trip experience unforgettable.

It was beautiful! I expected just a regular ship, but it was very different. you sit inside at floor level and there's space under the tables for your legs (like to sit regularly) try to sit on the hall side of you wanna make use of the unlimited soft drinks. the live music was beautiful and we stopped to see the Tokyo Aqua Symphony. It was spectacular. I recommend bringing a phone stabilizer of you have one in case you want to record. the food was delicious. the meat was wonderful and so was the miso soup and the desert was a nice final touch. The staff was very sweet and spoke to me in Japanese even though my skills were lacking. Truly wonderful experience.
