Full description
Colombo does most of its socialising after dark, partly because the heat of the day discourages anything else. The nightlife is scattered though, spread between Fort, Colombo 3 and Colombo 7, and getting between venues on your own means negotiating fares in the dark with drivers who do not know where you mean. This tour solves that by pairing you with a guide and a tuk-tuk for the evening.
The meeting point is the Old Dutch Hospital in Fort, which is the right place to start. The building is the oldest in the district, laid out around courtyards by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, and its restoration turned it into a restaurant and bar courtyard that fills up early. Ministry of Crab, the restaurant that made Sri Lankan lagoon crab internationally known, sits inside the same complex.
From there you move by tuk-tuk. The evening is loosely structured rather than fixed: your guide reads what you want, and the route between bars, rooftops and late-night eating changes with the night of the week, since Colombo is much quieter early in the week and busiest from Thursday onwards. Tell your guide at the start whether you want cocktails and rooftops, or beer and street food, and the route follows that.
The tuk-tuk is part of the experience rather than just transport. Riding through Fort at night, past the port gates and the lit-up Lotus Tower, with the sea air coming in from the open sides, is a different city from the one you saw at noon. Distances are short and journeys between venues are usually five to fifteen minutes.
One practical note: alcohol is not served on Poya full moon days anywhere in Sri Lanka, and many bars close entirely. If your date falls on a Poya day, the evening becomes a food and city-lights tour instead. Your guide will confirm this when you book.
