Full description
Colombo does not concentrate its sights into one walkable quarter, which is why this half-day runs by car. Five hours is enough to string together the monuments, the temple, the park and the market district without spending the whole time in traffic.
Independence Square is the first stop and the most straightforwardly political. The pavilion was built to mark the handover from British rule in February 1948, modelled on the audience hall of the last Kandyan kings, and it is ringed by stone lions and the statue of the first prime minister. Nearby, the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall is a piece of 1970s diplomacy in concrete, gifted by China and still the city's main state venue.
Viharamahadevi Park gives you the green half of central Colombo, laid out under the British as Victoria Park and renamed after a queen from the Anuradhapura chronicles. The longest stop is Gangaramaya Temple, where roughly fifty minutes is not excessive: the complex mixes Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture in one compound and its museum rooms are packed with donated objects, from jade Buddhas to a vintage Rolls-Royce.
Pettah closes the sightseeing. The tour passes through the market streets rather than stopping at length, which is enough to see how the district works, with each street given over to a single trade behind the red and white banded brickwork of the Jami Ul-Alfar mosque.
Lunch is the reason many people book this. Jaffna cooking comes from the Tamil north and is distinct from the southern kitchen: more Indian in its use of spice, heavier on crab and seafood curries, and known for the odiyal kool seafood broth. Served on a banana leaf and eaten with your right hand, it is a proper meal rather than a tasting, and it is worth arriving hungry.
