Colombo on Foot: Private Guided Walking Tour

Walking is the honest way to see Colombo, and also the least common. Most visitors are driven between landmarks and never get the connective tissue: the shophouse arcades, the Dutch street names, the tea kiosks, the cricket played on any flat surface. This private tour puts a local guide beside you for three hours, with short transfers only where distance makes walking pointless.

You begin at Independence Square in Colombo 7. The memorial hall was built to mark the end of British rule in 1948, and its form deliberately borrows from the audience hall of the last Kandyan kings, which is a political statement in stone worth having explained. From there the route passes Viharamahadevi Park and the domed town hall before turning towards Beira Lake.

Gangaramaya Temple is the anchor stop: a monastery, a school and a museum of donated objects, mixing Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese elements in a way no single tradition would approve of. Close by, the Pettah floating market lines the canal edge, and beyond it the older commercial city begins.

In Pettah your guide walks you past the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, the red and white striped landmark completed in 1908 and still the most photographed building in the district, and through the market streets where each lane trades in one thing. Fort follows, with the old lighthouse clock tower that once guided ships in before the buildings around it grew too tall.

The walk finishes on Galle Face Green, the long colonial-era promenade laid out along the sea. Late in the afternoon the kite sellers and the isso wade carts appear, selling deep-fried prawn fritters to anyone waiting for the sunset.
