Full description
The Thermopylae Sierra ran aground off Colombo and never came off. Part of the hull still stands clear of the water, which makes it one of the very few wrecks in Sri Lanka you can ride right up to on the surface rather than dive to. This trip is a guided jet ski run out to it and back along the Mount Lavinia coast.
You start on land with a briefing: throttle and steering, the kill cord on your wrist, how the machine turns when you come off the power, and the rules for staying in formation behind the guide. No licence is needed and no previous experience is expected, but you do need to follow the lead rider, because the run crosses water used by fishing boats out of Colombo.
The ride to the wreck takes roughly twenty-five to thirty minutes each way depending on the sea. You come in close enough to see the plating, the rust and the swell working through the exposed structure, with time to cut the engines and take photographs before turning back. Seabirds use it as a perch, and on clear days you can see how much of the hull sits below the surface.
Two hours covers the whole thing: the briefing, kitting up, the run out, the time at the wreck, the return and drying off. Actual time on the machine is a good deal less than that, and it is worth going in with that expectation.
Sea state governs everything here. The drier months from roughly November to April give the flattest water and the best chance of running on schedule. During the southwest monsoon, about May to September, swell along this coast frequently forces trips to be postponed, and a responsible operator will cancel rather than push a jet ski out into a bad sea.
You ride with a buoyancy aid on and the guide stays within sight throughout. Expect to get thoroughly wet.
