Full description

Four hours and a tuk-tuk covers a surprising amount of Colombo, because a three-wheeler goes where cars queue and stops where buses cannot. This private tour strings together more than eighteen landmarks across Fort, Pettah, Slave Island and Cinnamon Gardens, with entry tickets already covered.

The tour opens around Beira Lake at Gangaramaya, a monastery that collects things: relics, vintage cars, gifts from pilgrims, and architecture borrowed from Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese traditions all at once. From there you move through Viharamahadevi Park, the domed town hall and Independence Square, where the 1948 memorial hall marks the end of British rule and copies the audience hall of the Kandyan kings.

Galle Face Green comes next, the long colonial promenade along the sea, and behind it the old parliament building. Then the tour turns into the working city: the Pettah floating market on the canal, the covered market streets where each lane trades in one thing, the Dutch-era bell tower, and the striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque of 1908 that has become the emblem of the district.

Fort is the last quarter, carrying the Portuguese, Dutch and British layers of the port in one square kilometre: the old lighthouse and clock tower, the maritime museum in a Dutch building, the colonial banking houses and the Sri Kailawasanatan Hindu temple. The Lotus Tower is the modern counterpoint, and a tea merchant stop lets you taste Ceylon tea.

Because the tour is private, the pace is yours. Cruise passengers are a large part of who takes it, so the operator works to ship timings and will get you back to the terminal with margin; say when you book what your all-aboard time is. Hotel pickup anywhere in Colombo is included.

The Zoom tour was very good and informative. We saw many beautiful temples and buildings. The guide was super friendly and never stressed us out and let us take as many photos as we wanted. He even showed us around for 5 hours instead of 4 because he explained and showed everything in such detail. There were also a few insider tips that we would never have discovered without a guide. Would recommend! Our tour guide's name was Fasmi. He was very, very friendly and drove well!

I recommend this activity to everyone! Our tour guide arrived on time and gave us a wonderful tour of the city! We managed to do in 2 hours what would have taken us a whole week. Everything was relaxed, with stops for photos, nothing was a problem, and we also have a lot of beautiful photos and experiences - photos better than those taken by a professional🙊📷😊👍🫶🏻

Zoom Tours provided an amazing service with this trip! We had so much fun & saw the most amazing sights on our tour. It was so interesting to see the Maritime Museum, the market and the Hindu temple from the inside! Also, we got to taste some fresh fruit & drink a coconut. Our tour guide Fasmi was so friendly and welcoming and went out of his way to provide us with the most amazing experience. He even got us some sweet flower necklaces & drove like an absolute legend through the busy Colombo streets. 10/10 experience and we would deffo recommend to everyone!

December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade — one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else — our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
