Full description
This is a tuk-tuk tour, and it is worth saying plainly what that means. You sit in the back of a three-wheeler with the sides open, your driver doubles as your guide, and you go through Colombo traffic at the level of the traffic rather than above it. It is hot, it is loud, and it gets into lanes a car simply cannot turn into. For a first three hours in the city, that is a fair trade.
The route opens in Pettah with the Jami Ul-Alfar mosque, built in 1908 in red and white banded brick and known to everyone as the Red Mosque. The surrounding streets are the city's oldest market district, and each one specialises: fabric on one, hardware on the next, dried fish and spices further in. Fort Railway Station comes next, the British-built terminus that still handles the hill country lines, and then the Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam kovil, a working Hindu temple with the carved gopuram that gives Fort its most colourful frontage.
Gangaramaya Temple gets the longest stop at around three quarters of an hour. It is a genuinely unusual place: the architecture pulls from Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese traditions in one compound, and the museum rooms hold decades of donations, from carved ivory and jade to a vintage car parked among the statues.
The last section covers the modern civic city. The Lotus Tower and the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall are photo stops, and Independence Square is where the tour usually ends, at the pavilion built to mark the 1948 handover from British rule and modelled on a Kandyan royal audience hall.
Three hours is enough to leave you oriented rather than exhausted, and it works well on a first day when you want a sense of the city before deciding where to go back to on foot.
