Colombo Temples and Markets: Guided Four-Hour City Tour

Colombo rewards anyone willing to look past the office towers on the seafront. The port has changed hands three times in five centuries, from the Portuguese to the Dutch to the British, and the older districts still carry that layering in their street names, their arcades and their churches. This four-hour tour by van concentrates on that older city rather than the new one.

The Old Dutch Hospital in Fort is the natural starting point. It is the oldest surviving building in the district, a low colonnaded block built around two courtyards in the seventeenth century, and after decades of neglect it now houses restaurants and shops. The proportions are unchanged, and standing in the inner courtyard is the quickest way to understand what Dutch Colombo actually looked like.

Seema Malaka follows, and it is a complete change of register. The temple sits out on Beira Lake on a set of connected platforms, designed by Geoffrey Bawa in the late 1970s after the original structure sank. It belongs to the Gangaramaya monastery and is used for monastic ordinations, but for most of the day it is simply a quiet set of decks over the water with rows of seated Buddha figures.

Pettah is the loud half of the tour. The market is not one building but a grid of streets, and each street sells roughly one trade: hardware, textiles, dried fish, electrical goods, festival garlands. Your guide steers you through it and explains what you are looking at, which matters here more than at any other stop.
