Full description

The tuk-tuk is the right vehicle for Colombo. It fits down the Pettah lanes where a van cannot go, it stops wherever you point, and in an open three-wheeler you get the fish market, the frangipani and the exhaust, which is most of the city's character. This private four-hour tour covers the main sights at a pace that leaves room to stop.

The route works around the city's geography rather than a fixed list. You take in the Lotus Tower, the monastery at Gangaramaya with its mixed Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture, Viharamahadevi Park and Independence Square in the old Cinnamon Gardens quarter, and the old parliament building on the seafront. Galle Face Green, the colonial promenade, is timed for late afternoon when the kite sellers and the isso wade carts come out.

The second half is the older commercial city. Pettah's market streets each specialise in one trade, and the vegetable market, the Kayman's Gate Dutch bell tower and the striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque of 1908 sit within a few blocks. Fort follows: the old lighthouse clock tower, the maritime museum in a Dutch-era building, and a tea merchant where you can taste Ceylon tea.

The meal is the part that makes the tour worth the extra hour. Depending on whether you take the lunch or dinner slot, your guide takes you to a local place rather than a hotel restaurant, and you eat rice and curry, kottu roti or hoppers with whatever the kitchen does best that day. Say in advance if you are vegetarian or need the spice level dialled down.

Because it is private, the tour is yours to redirect. Pickup and drop-off are included anywhere across the Colombo postal districts, and if you want to skip a stop and spend twenty extra minutes in the market, that is a conversation, not a problem.

It was a brilliant experience. Met by our driver Raju at Port Entrance as advised. Proceeded to show us all the promised sights and more. His driving of Tuk Tuk was amazing and in that traffic was an experience in itself. Guided us around the more significant sights and volunteered to take photos of us regularly. Always smiling. Tea stop was interesting as tried a number of teas and apparently were visited by a Bollywood actor that caused some disruption amongst the locals! Great way to experience Colombo and good value.

Shore excursion from the cruise port. We had a great time on our Tuk Tuk tour with Zoom Tours. Mohammad and Asmi took us around the sights of Columbo and explained about the history of Sri Lanka and showed us famous monuments. We saw some temples where they explained interesting things about the religions, and went round with us. We enjoyed the tea tasting and bought some lovely Sri Lankan teas to take home, and then finished up at Galle Face green before heading back to the cruise port. We really enjoyed the tour and would absolutely recommend it. If you are taking this tour, make sure you wear shoes that are easy to take off as the Hindu and Buddhist temples require bare feet.

Our driver Rizwan came to pick us up on time and brought us through a tour of the city. It was a perfect way to soak in the city, stopping at numerous historical places. He did his best to personalize the tour. We booked the trip in the evening because we arrived around 4AM. So some things were closed to visit inside. We didn’t mind and felt like we saw plenty and some things look even better during nighttime like the Lotus Tower. From a logistical point: if you are tall like me, you sometimes have to bend down to see things. The tuktuks in sri lanka a roof that curves around. Overall a great way to get to know Colombo as we are leaving for a trip within the cultural triangle the day after!

Our guide Mohamad was very nice and competent and gave us a great insight into Colombo. We felt very comfortable and safe and were able to take lots of great photos. The only thing we missed was the tea tasting, it was more of a sales pitch - but that's part of it... Overall though: unreserved recommendation!

December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade — one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else — our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
