Full description
This pairs two sites ten minutes apart in the dry zone: the cave temples at Dambulla, which are about painted interiors and continuity of worship, and Pidurangala, which is about a scramble and a view. It is a fourteen-hour day from Colombo with around six and a half hours of driving, so treat it as a full commitment.
Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, in continuous use as a monastery since the first century BC. Five caves cut into the overhang of a granite hill hold more than 150 Buddha figures along with statues of kings and Hindu deities. The painting makes it: every ceiling and wall is covered, the murals following the curve of the rock in ochres and reds renewed over centuries. The largest cave holds a 14-metre reclining Buddha cut from the rock.
Pidurangala is the counterpoint. It is the rock immediately north of Sigiriya, and it was a monastery long before Kashyapa built his citadel next door. The climb takes about half an hour: stone steps at first, past a reclining Buddha in brick, then a genuine boulder scramble for the last stretch where you use your hands. The reward at the top is the view of Sigiriya rising out of the forest, which you cannot get from Sigiriya itself.
Many choose Pidurangala because it is the quieter and cheaper of the two rocks, with no queues on the staircases. If you want to climb Sigiriya instead, that is a different trip with a different ticket, so be clear at booking.
The day includes breakfast on the road, an hour and a half for lunch near Sigiriya, and the long drive home. Your driver-guide handles the route and the timings. Start early: both the caves and the rock are far more pleasant before the middle of the day, and the drive back is easier in daylight.
