Sixteen hours, of which about twelve are driving. That is the honest description of this trip and it should decide whether you book it.
Ella is roughly six hours from Colombo by road, climbing from sea level to a thousand metres through Kandy or the southern route. Done as a return day trip it means leaving before dawn and getting back late, with maybe four hours on the ground.
What those four hours cover is the real Ella list: Little Adam's Peak, 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view through the Ella Gap; the Nine Arch Bridge, 91 metres of stone viaduct built during the First World War without steel because the steel went to Europe; Ravana Falls beside the road; and a working tea factory taking the leaf from withering trough to grading table.
The case for it: some itineraries genuinely cannot move hotels, and a long day is better than not seeing the hill country at all.
The case against, which is stronger: two nights in Ella costs one extra hotel night, removes twelve hours in a car, and gives you the dawn on Little Adam's Peak that this trip cannot. If your dates have any flexibility, take that instead.

From about 5am, finished by eight. It is a working auction rather than an attraction — boats landing, the catch on the sand, and everything packed up before the heat. Jet lag makes the early start easy.

Roughly LKR 3,000-4,500 from the official counters in arrivals. Ride-hailing apps are usually cheaper but need a local SIM — buy one in arrivals for a few dollars, which is the single most useful thing to do before leaving the terminal.
One night on arrival and one on departure, or two if you want both the dawn fish market and a lagoon trip without rushing. Negombo is comfortable and well placed rather than a destination in its own right, and it does that job very well.
In the dry season, roughly December to March. From May to September the southwest monsoon builds the sea along this whole coast and currents strengthen. The beach is long and usable but it is not the south coast.

Roughly every two hours, but Sri Lanka Railways runs 30-90 minutes late routinely, so any blog quoting exact times is quoting a timetable rather than reality. Ask at Ella station on the morning — staff will tell you what is expected and how late it is running.
Little Adam's Peak for almost everyone — 45 minutes up a stepped path for arguably the better view, out through the Ella Gap. Ella Rock is three hours return, largely unsigned, and people get lost on it regularly; take a guide or an offline map. Compared in full here.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. The real risk is cloud, not rain — at 1,000 m the view can be inside a cloud on a dry day, and mornings are clearer than afternoons in every month. See best time to visit Ella.

Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.
December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
