Full description
The coast road south of Colombo runs through a string of towns that made their living from cinnamon, coir and fishing long before tourism arrived, and this day follows it as far as Galle. The expressway gets you clear of the city quickly, and the day is spent on short hops between stops rather than one long drive.
Bentota is the first stop, a river mouth where the Bentota Ganga meets the sea. From there the route continues to Kosgoda, where a sea turtle hatchery collects eggs from the beach, incubates them and releases the hatchlings. Five of the world's seven marine turtle species nest on this stretch of coast, and the hatchery staff explain the pressures they face from poaching, nets and coastal development.
The Madu Ganga boat safari is the longest stop of the day. The river opens into a shallow lagoon dotted with small islands, and the boat runs through mangrove tunnels where the roots close overhead. You pass cinnamon islands where the bark is still peeled by hand, small temples on their own islets, fish farms and, if the light is right, water monitors and kingfishers along the banks. Around ninety minutes to two hours on the water.
Lunch is on the coast at Hikkaduwa, then Galle. The fort was built by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Dutch in the 17th century, and the ramparts still enclose a working town of Dutch-era houses, churches, a mosque and the lighthouse on the sea wall. It is a UNESCO site and it holds up to walking: the streets inside are small enough that an hour on foot covers most of them.
The drive back to Colombo takes a couple of hours. Altogether this is a full day, but a gentler one than the trips inland, with most of the time spent out of the vehicle.

We had a good taste of the South on this one day trip. We really enjoyed visiting Bentota beach, Madu river safari and walking around Galle. Range was accommodating, providing good information, checked to ensure we were happy and made photo stops along the way. It was a good way of filling in the day before we flew out late that night.

Especially for his flexibility and good thinking in introducing us to some extra free entry stops along the way to Galle, such as going to a gemstone mine and a Tsunami photo museum, whilst still remaining efficient with the timing for a jam-packed day. We had a very enjoyable time on our tour last week. Our driver Dhanesh picked us up promptly and drove us around in his comfortable car. He stuck to the itinerary outlined on the tour description but also mentioned that if there was anything of interest we wanted to do that wasn't on the list, he would be happy to make that happen for us. All the locations were very fun and beautiful, and we learnt many different things. One of my favourite parts of the trip was on the boat ride when we stopped off at a small island and were shown how cinnamon is harvested and dried. The whole day from 8am to 8pm and we felt like the experience was well worth it.
We booked this tour during our cruise stop in Colombo – and it was a real highlight. We were greeted promptly at the port entrance by our guide, Chathu, and the driver. The car was modern, clean, and very comfortable. Even on the drive through Colombo and later heading south, Chathu told us a lot about Sri Lanka, its culture, and life in the country. In Bentota, a stunning beach awaited us, where we enjoyed fresh coconuts in perfect weather. Afterward, we visited a turtle hatchery with fascinating insights into the conservation of these animals. Another highlight was the boat trip on the Madu River, past mangroves and to an island where we were shown the traditional cinnamon-making process. Since we were short on time, Chathu flexibly adjusted the route. Instead of Galle, we visited a moonstone mine and ended the day at a restaurant with a sea view. We returned to the ship right on schedule.
