Full description
Kandy was the last independent kingdom on the island, holding out in the hills until the British took it in 1815, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at its centre is the reason it still matters. The relic housed there was historically what legitimised a Sri Lankan king: whoever held the tooth held the right to rule. It is an active place of worship, busiest during the daily pujas when drummers play at the shrine door.
The drive from Colombo climbs inland through Kegalle and Mawanella, and the road itself is part of the day. You pass rubber estates, stalls selling cashews and pineapple, and the spice gardens this stretch is known for. The tour stops at one for a walk through cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and vanilla.
Pinnawala, near Kegalle, is where the day's elephant stop happens. It began in the 1970s as a home for orphaned calves and has become one of the most visited places on this route, with a herd led down to the Maha Oya river. It is a managed, captive setting rather than a wild one, and it is worth going in knowing that.
After Kandy, the route takes in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, laid out on a loop of the Mahaweli river on ground that once belonged to Kandyan royalty. The orchid house, the giant Javan fig and the palm avenue are the set pieces, and an hour goes quickly. The last stop is a tea factory on the plantation slopes, where you follow the leaf from withering trough to roller to drier and taste the result.
Travel is in a private air-conditioned car with your own driver, so the pace is yours within reason. Be realistic about the length: with pickup early in the morning and a return after dark, this is a thirteen-hour day covering roughly 250 kilometres of hill roads, and the driving is a real part of it.
