Full description
Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 metres, and the climb to reach it is a large part of what you are paying for. The road leaves the coastal plain, works up through Kadugannawa or Hatton depending on the route, and the landscape changes as you go — paddy gives way to rubber, rubber to tea, and the air cools until you need a jacket in a country where nobody packs one. Waterfalls appear beside the road for much of the last hour.
The town was built by the British as a hot-season retreat and still looks the part: a racecourse, a golf course, mock-Tudor bungalows and a post office that would not be out of place in the Home Counties. Your stop at The Grand Hotel for high tea leans into that history — the building was a governor's residence before it became a hotel.
Before that you visit a working tea factory. Tea reached Ceylon after coffee blight destroyed the earlier plantations in the 1870s, and the hill country was replanted almost entirely with it. Inside you follow the leaf from withering troughs through rolling, oxidation, firing and grading, and taste what comes out at the end.
Gregory Lake fills the valley below the town. Dammed under Governor Gregory in the 1870s, it is now where Nuwara Eliya spends its weekends — boats on the water, horses along the shore, food stalls around the edge. You have around an hour there.
This is a fifteen-hour day and there is no way to make it shorter. Roughly ten of those hours are spent in the car, split between the climb up and the descent back to the coast in the dark. The scenery is worth it and the driver stops where it makes sense, but you should book this knowing you will leave in the small hours and return late. If you can spare a night in the hills instead, that is the better trip — this one is for travellers who cannot.
