Tour Itinerary
The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
Bandaranaike International Airport Meet & Greet
Your English-speaking chauffeur guide meets you in arrivals with a name board and a warm Sri Lankan welcome. Settle into your private air-conditioned van — your ride for the whole road trip — and head inland, leaving the coastal plain behind for the western slopes of the hill country.
Kitulgala White-Water Rafting on the Kelani River
Strap on a helmet and hit the Kelani River, Sri Lanka's premier rafting run. Around 5 km of Grade 2–3 rapids — Butter Crunch, Head Chopper, Rib Cage — carry you through steep rainforest gorge with certified guides on every raft. Between rapids the river flattens out for a float and a jump from the rocks. Suitable for complete beginners; no experience needed. Activities: Rafting, canoeing, hiking, shooting range · Duration: 4 hours · Admission: Optional, extra fee
Transfer to Your Kitulgala Eco-Lodge
A short drive brings you to your riverside eco-lodge, tucked into the rainforest with the sound of the Kelani running below. Check in, dry off, and let the jungle take over.
Kitulgala — Rainforest Evening
Kitulgala sits in one of the wettest, most biodiverse pockets of the island, home to a long list of endemic birds, frogs and butterflies — and to the filming location of The Bridge on the River Kwai. Take a short nature walk before dusk, listen to the frog chorus start up after dark, and turn in early under the canopy.
Scenic Climb via Ginigathena & Norton Bridge
Leave the rainforest and start the ascent on a narrow mountain road most tour buses never touch, past Ginigathena Pass and the reservoirs of the Norton Bridge hydropower scheme. Tea gardens replace jungle, and the temperature drops with every hairpin bend.
Aberdeen Falls
A short but steep jungle trail — around 20 minutes down through forest and rock steps — brings you to the base of a 98-metre waterfall crashing into a deep green plunge pool. Named after the Scottish city by British planters, Aberdeen is one of the most photogenic falls in the country and, on most days, you will have it almost to yourself.
Upper Laxapana & Laxapana Falls
Continue to the Laxapana valley for a double act: first the quieter Upper Laxapana viewpoint, then the main event — Laxapana Falls, a 126-metre cascade that ranks among the tallest in Sri Lanka. A walk down the hillside path (and a long flight of steps) puts you at the foot of the falls, where the spray drifts across the valley. The water here also feeds one of the island's oldest hydroelectric stations.
Arrival in Hatton — Heart of the Tea Country
Climb the final stretch into Hatton, a working hill-country town ringed by some of the finest tea estates in the world, with Adam's Peak rising to the south. Check in, warm up with a pot of estate tea, and enjoy the cool mountain evening.
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) Night Hike & Sunrise (Optional)
Set out around 2:00 am from Nallathanniya for the climb that pilgrims of four faiths have made for over a thousand years — roughly 5,500 steps and 7 km to a 2,243-metre summit crowned by the sacred footprint. It is genuinely demanding, but standing at the top as the sun rises and the mountain casts its perfect triangular shadow across the clouds below is one of the great experiences in Asia.
Hatton Tea Estates & Highland Scenery
For those not climbing — or recovering from it — spend the morning among the tea. Walk out into the plantations where pluckers work the terraces, look out over the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs mirroring the peaks, and take in the hill country at its greenest and quietest.
Tea Factory Visit & Tasting
Step inside a working highland factory and follow the leaf from withering trough to grading table, ending with a tasting of high-grown Ceylon tea straight from the source. Hatton's altitude produces some of the most prized tea on the island.
Free Afternoon in Hatton
The rest of the day is yours: browse the small-town market and tea shops, rest up at the hotel, or simply sit out with a valley view. Tomorrow is a long and spectacular drive, so an early night is well earned.
Haton to Balangoda — Descending the Southern Slopes
Wind down out of the highlands on a rarely driven route, watching tea give way to rubber, paddy and dry-zone scrub. Balangoda is a lively market town best known to archaeologists as the home of Balangoda Man, whose remains date human settlement here back some 38,000 years. Stop for street food, a glass of plain tea, and views back at the mountains you have just left.
Kuragala Ancient Buddhist Monastery
Climb to a remarkable rock outcrop where a 2nd-century-BC Buddhist forest monastery, with drip-ledged caves and Brahmi inscriptions, sits alongside a centuries-old Sufi shrine — one of the few places in the world where both traditions share a summit. The reward at the top is a vast panorama across the Sabaragamuwa hills and the plains beyond.
Duwili Ella Waterfall
The trip's true hidden gem. A rough track and a walk through scrub and riverbed lead to Duwili Ella — the "Dusty Falls" — where water drops into a rock amphitheatre and throws up so much mist that it hangs in the air like smoke. You can walk in behind the curtain of falling water. Very few visitors ever make it here.
Kalthota & the Diyawini Ella Valley
Pause in Kalthota, a farming village of ancient irrigation canals attributed to King Parakramabahu, set beneath a wall of mountains. Wide-open river pools, paddy terraces and near-total quiet make this one of the most unspoilt corners of the country.
Arrival in Yala
The last leg runs east into the dry zone, past Udawalawe country and salt-pan flats, to your lodge on the edge of Yala National Park. Check in, hear the evening birdsong, and get ready for a very early start
Transfer to the Park Gate
Leave before sunrise for the short run to the park entrance, joining the queue of jeeps as the gates open — the coolest hours are the most active for wildlife, and the first hour is often the best of the day.
Yala National Park
Explore Yala National Park with a licensed naturalist and discover its rich wildlife, including leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and diverse birdlife. Wildlife is observed naturally and responsibly, with no feeding, chasing, crowding or deliberate disturbance, in line with park regulations and ethical wildlife practices.
