Full description
If you want to see wild elephants in Sri Lanka and you only have one day, Udawalawe is the park to choose. It was created in the 1970s around an irrigation reservoir, and the flooding cleared much of the forest into open grassland. Sightings are unusually dependable — several hundred elephants live here permanently and the terrain leaves them nowhere to hide.
The safari runs about four hours in an open 4x4 with a driver who knows the tracks. Alongside the elephants there are water buffalo, spotted deer, jackal, crocodiles in the reservoir and a genuinely good bird list: serpent eagles, bee-eaters, hornbills and fish eagles over the tank. Leopards exist here but are a rare sighting; treat one as a bonus.
After the drive you stop for lunch at a local restaurant, then visit the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. This is a Department of Wildlife Conservation facility that raises orphaned calves with the specific aim of releasing them back into the wild, which is why the animals are kept away from human contact and viewed from a distance rather than handled. Feeding sessions run at set times through the day and the calves come in as a group to be bottle-fed. It is a working rehabilitation centre, not a place where you ride or bathe elephants — which is the point.
Everything runs privately, so the day is yours. That matters most for timing: the driver can aim you at the morning gate opening, when elephant activity is highest, and work the return around the feeding schedule.
Udawalawe sits around 165 kilometres southeast of Colombo, roughly three hours in each direction on a good run. With the safari, lunch and the transit home stop, expect a full day of twelve hours or more with an early start. It is worth doing, but it is not a relaxed one.

Traveler Reviews
We had a fantastic day with Chami, who was incredibly dedicated to our safety. We have absolutely no complaints about our excursion. We highly recommend this activity and wish other users the same wonderful day we had.
It was amazing to see the baby elephants being fed in the transit house, as well as getting up close to them in the wild. The guide who drove us up there, and the one who took us around the park were both friendly, knowledgeable, and excellent.
