Full description
Sinharaja is the last substantial block of primary lowland rainforest left in Sri Lanka, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site and still dense enough that the canopy closes over the trail within minutes of setting off. It is not a scenic viewpoint kind of place. What you get is close range: leaf litter, buttress roots, and the sound of a mixed-species bird flock passing overhead before you see any of it.
Pickup is available from Colombo and from a long list of coast towns between Mount Lavinia and Ambalangoda, and the drive inland takes around two hours from the southern pickup points, longer if you are starting in central Colombo. The road narrows steadily and the last stretch to the reserve entrance is rough.
The trek itself runs about three hours with a forest guide. Sinharaja holds a high share of Sri Lanka's endemic species, and the guides are good at the ones that reward patience: the red-faced malkoha and the Sri Lanka blue magpie among the birds, purple-faced langurs overhead, and an endless supply of endemic frogs, agamid lizards and butterflies at eye level. The pace is slow and deliberate, which is the point.
Streams cross the trail in several places and the route takes in forest waterfalls where the water is cold and clear enough to stand in. Your guide will also explain why the reserve exists in the form it does: logging licences in the 1970s came close to clearing it, and the buffer zone villages now depend on the forest staying intact.
Leeches are a fact of the place rather than a warning to be softened. In wet weather they are numerous, they are harmless, and long socks tucked into trousers deal with most of them. Come prepared and the forest is one of the better things to do within reach of the coast.

It was a very nice excursion. Unfortunately, we were a bit unlucky with the weather because it had rained a lot. Unfortunately, there weren't that many animals to see. However, no one can control the weather; the time in the rainforest was still very enjoyable. It was a bit slippery, but we had a lot of fun, and the waterfalls were impressive. The last waterfall had these tiny fish in it that were nibbling on a rum bottle. Unfortunately, we didn't bring anything for swimming; at the last waterfall, we would have been allowed to swim, too. Sri Lanka has a very diverse and beautiful landscape, and the people are also very friendly.😊
Our driver was excellent, he shared his excellent local knowledge with us and was always polite and helpful. The trek up the waterfall was more demanding than we thought ( we are in our 60’s) but we managed to scale the waterfalls as we had good hiking shoes. Please take solid walking shoes and a good ruck sack. The only reason not giving this trip excellent was that the rain forest guide was rude and constantly talking on his phone.
