Full description
The road south of Colombo runs almost the whole way within sight of the sea, and this trip uses it to string together four quite different things in a single day: a beach, a turtle conservation project, a mangrove river and a walled Dutch town. It is a lot of ground, and the honest version is that you spend a fair share of the day in the car.
The first stop is Bentota, where the Bentota Ganga meets the ocean behind a long sandspit. It is a short photo stop rather than a beach afternoon, and it is also the launching point for water sports if you want to add any at your own cost.
At Kosgoda you visit a sea turtle conservation project. Five of the world's seven marine turtle species nest on Sri Lanka's coast, and hatcheries here buy eggs from beach collectors to keep them out of the market, then release the hatchlings. It is worth knowing that the model is debated among conservationists; the better projects release quickly and keep handling to a minimum, and it is fair to ask questions while you are there.
The Madu River safari is the quiet part of the day. The estuary is a Ramsar wetland scattered with small islands, and the boat threads through mangrove tunnels where the canopy closes overhead. You will pass fish-therapy platforms, a cinnamon island where peeling is demonstrated, and a temple island reached only by water.
Galle Fort finishes the day. The Dutch rebuilt the Portuguese fort in the seventeenth century and its grid of streets, ramparts and the 1848 lighthouse survived the 2004 tsunami largely intact. You get about an hour to walk it, which is enough for the walls and the main lanes rather than the museums. A local restaurant lunch is included along the way, and you are returned to Negombo or Colombo in the evening.

We had a super nice day, got to see a lot, and had a really dedicated guide named Raga. He taught us a lot and showed us a bunch of things that weren't even in the tour description. The river safari was our highlight Thanks a lot to Raga for the unforgettable beautiful day :)
We had a very nice driver who told us and showed us a lot. The tour was also very varied!
so many great impressions, nature is fantastic. so many impressions, the nature is amazing
We were picked up by Dhanesh in the morning who was on time and introduced himself and ran through how the day would run very professionally. He was a very competent driver and we felt safe the whole day. Dhanesh was very knowledgable of the route, stops and Sri Lanka generally; he regularly passed on small facts along the way which were very interesting. Dhanesh was also very flexible in terms of stops, when we stopped for breaks / activities he was very clear we could take as long as we liked. He also asked if we wanted to stop at numerous additional places throughout the day which we did not know were there which was appreciated. I would highly recommend this tour in Dhanesh’s capable hands. With regards to the tour stops itself, the turtle hatchery, river safari and Galle river fort were all very fun and interesting - I would recommend. The food stop was also good, really tasty and varied seafood options.
