Full description

Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and, for most visitors, the least familiar. Its name means "land of lakes", and the park is built around villus β€” natural sand-rimmed rain basins that draw animals out of the dry forest to drink. Rather than driving a circuit of open grassland, you move between water bodies and wait.

The park is best known for its leopards, and Wilpattu holds a healthy population, but nobody honest will promise you one. Sloth bear sightings peak in June and July when the palu fruit ripens. Beyond those two, expect spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, buffalo, crocodiles at the villu edges and a long bird list, from painted storks to serpent eagles.

You travel in an open 4x4 with a driver-tracker who reads these tracks daily by radio and by fresh pawprints in the sand. Roughly four hours are spent inside the park. Take the morning drive, which starts at first light when animal movement is highest, or the afternoon drive, which runs through the golden hours to closing time.

Be clear-eyed about the travel if you are booking this from Colombo. Wilpattu sits roughly 180 kilometres north of the city, and the road runs through Puttalam rather than along a highway the whole way. With a pre-dawn departure and a return after the drive, this becomes a long day of ten to twelve hours, most of it in a vehicle. Travellers already staying in Anuradhapura, Negombo or near the park entrance have a far easier version of the same experience, and pickup from those points is available.

Bring a hat, sunglasses and something to cushion the bumps β€” the internal tracks are rough sand and rock. Neutral clothing helps, as does a zoom lens. Drives run year round, though the park can close briefly during heavy monsoon rain from October to December.

Absolutely top-notch and highly recommended We spontaneously decided to do this for our Sri Lanka road trip, because Wilpattu is less known to tourists than other national parks. Our driver was on time at the pick-up spot and dropped us off on time too The tour was really awesome, and we were lucky enough to see a leopard too. The guide was friendly and gave us a lot of great info and background knowledge about the animals and the park. All in all, absolutely top-notch 😊

An incredible experience. Our guide, Nadhun, is a very nice person and very respectful, and even though he didn't know much English, he showed us everything we saw during the safari. He is also a great expert on the park, he took us through many areas, cutting corners where he thought best. We were very lucky because in addition to seeing a great variety of fauna, we were able to see four leopards. It was incredible, highly recommended, an unforgettable experience. The only thing I can say against it is that everything they offer you for food is very spicy, including breakfast, but that is secondary. A unique experience!

What a wonderful experience!! Our driver was great, reliable and the car was very comfortable for the 3.5hr journey each way. The system at the park was very smooth, as soon as we arrived our guide and driver were ready to welcome us and set off on safari. We were so lucky to see ALL the animals within the afternoon and our guide was very knowledgeable, sharing information throughout the trip. Our 7 year old was awestruck, a trip we will all remember and highly recommend.

Incredible! We saw the leopard!! I recommend doing it in the morning. When we returned around 10am it was full of wasps and if you are afraid of them it is a bad time.

Responsive guides, beautiful environment. No elephants for us, but the guide seemed to say it was better to come in the morning. Very satisfied nonetheless.

It was really great. We were picked up at the pickup point as agreed and had the jeep to ourselves, which was of course a stroke of luck for us. We were even allowed to take our large luggage with us. Our driver wasn't fluent in English, but he was really friendly and had very trained eyes. He saw animals that we would never have seen. We saw everything from elephants, leopards, buffalo, monkeys, deer, various types of birds, rabbits and crocodiles. And all of that in "only" 5 hours... So our day was absolutely positive. I can only recommend it for the price.

December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September β€” the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere β€” insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish β€” rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade β€” one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest β€” about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else β€” our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
