Full description

Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and the quietest of the leopard parks. Where Yala can put dozens of jeeps around a single sighting, Wilpattu covers far more ground with far fewer vehicles, so a leopard here is usually yours alone. The trade-off is honest: dense scrub forest hides animals well, and you may drive for an hour between sightings.

The park takes its name and its character from the villus, natural sand-rimmed rainwater lakes scattered through the forest. Animals come to the villus to drink, so the safari route works from one to the next. Sloth bears are a genuine possibility here, particularly in June and July when the palu fruit ripens and they climb for it. Leopard, spotted deer, sambar, water buffalo, mugger crocodile, wild boar and a long list of resident and migrant birds fill in the rest.

This is a private trip, so the jeep and the tracker are yours. That matters more than it sounds. It means you can sit at a villu and wait rather than being moved on, and it means the driver can follow alarm calls instead of a fixed circuit.

Be clear-eyed about the day. Wilpattu is roughly 180 kilometres north of Colombo and the drive is around three and a half hours each way, so pickup is before dawn and you will be back late. Counting travel, the park drive and lunch, this is a twelve to fourteen hour day. If you would rather not do it in one go, an overnight near the park entrance turns it into a much better trip.

Entrance fees and lunch are already covered, which removes the usual scramble for cash at the park ticket office.

The drier months from around February to October give the best game viewing, as animals concentrate at the water. The park occasionally closes sections after heavy rain.

We were able to see a lot of animals, even a leopard from a distance, so we were very lucky and our driver responded to our wishes, it was a very successful trip. And we also drove away from the mass tourism, except for the leopard and bear, then more and more came.

Our driver Raveen was very polite & knowledgeable. The drive was very comfortable to the national park. Our safari jeep driver did his best to show us as many animals as possible and was quick to spot hidden birds & animals. Then we stopped for a very nice lunch at Wilpattu Coco Hut Village Foods - the owner was very friendly & the food was delicious & plentiful.

Had a really great day In the morning at 4:30 a.m., the driver (Emila) picked us up and we went to Wilpattu National Park. At the park, we were paired with another driver for the safari. Emila also came with us. We can't say anything other than that we had a really good safari. The safari driver and Emila were both really good. There was room for information, but he also made sure we saw as many animals as possible. It's really nice that he doesn't just stick to the main path, but also takes the side roads. Highly recommended!

The driver was very friendly and drove very smoothly. The Jeep driver was also very nice; in addition, a national park guide was present, who could tell us a lot about the animals in the park. The included lunch at a buffet restaurant was also okay. We didn’t see many animals because there had been a storm the night before, and many areas of the park were impassable. Overall, it was a great tour; however, for the price, we probably wouldn’t book it again—although it was certainly fair for the service provided!

December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade — one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else — our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
