Yala sits in the dry southeast of the island and is the reason most visitors to Sri Lanka come home talking about leopards. Block One, the section open to safari vehicles, carries the highest recorded density of leopards anywhere, and because the scrub is low the animals are genuinely visible rather than merely present. Sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles and a long list of birds fill in the rest.

The trip is run privately, which matters here in two ways. You get your own 4x4 and driver-tracker rather than a shared bench, so the vehicle can wait somewhere on a radio report instead of moving on to a schedule, and you can choose a morning or an afternoon slot. Mornings are cooler and the light is better early; afternoons often produce more movement as the heat drops.

The safari itself runs about three hours inside the park. A good tracker spends much of it stationary and listening: alarm calls from spotted deer and langurs are what actually locate a leopard. Sightings are never guaranteed, and any operator who promises one is selling something. The park is also a working ecosystem with strict rules about staying in the vehicle and keeping to the tracks.

The transfer is the honest cost of doing Yala in a day from Colombo. The park lies right across the island in the southeast, and the drive is long in both directions even using the southern expressway for the fast section. Departure is before dawn for a morning safari, and you will be back late.

Lunch, park fees and the jeep are all handled, so the day needs nothing from you beyond the early alarm. If your schedule allows a night in Tissamaharama instead, that is the more comfortable way to see the park, but this is a workable single-day option.
