Full description

This is the waterfall version of the coast-to-hill-country day, and it goes further inland than the standard Ella trip to reach Diyaluma.

Diyaluma is 220 metres, the second-highest waterfall in the country, and it drops off the Uva escarpment in a single sheet visible in full from the road. Most people photograph it from below. The climb to the natural infinity pools at the top takes about 45 minutes on steep, loose ground and is the part worth doing if you have the shoes and the legs for it — sitting in a rock pool on the lip of a 220-metre drop is the image, and it is also genuinely dangerous, with an unfenced edge where people have died.

Ravana Falls, closer to Ella, is the roadside one: broad, powerful in the wet season, and named for the demon king of the Ramayana.

Halpewatte is the largest tea factory in the Uva region and one of the better ones to visit — the leaf goes from withering trough through rolling, oxidation and firing to the grading table, and the tour ends on a terrace looking out over the estates.

Twelve hours, eight of them driving, which is the honest cost of reaching the hill country from a beach.
