Full description
Fifteen hours is the honest length, and this trip exists because plenty of people spend a week on the south coast and want the hill country without moving hotels.
Eight of those hours are driving. Ella is about four hours inland and the road climbs from sea level up the Uva escarpment, changing landscape completely twice on the way. By the time you arrive you are at a thousand metres and fifteen degrees cooler than the beach you left before dawn.
On the ground the day is the full Ella list. Ravana Falls beside the road. Little Adam's Peak, 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view through the Gap. A short train leg between Demodara and Ella, which puts you on the hill line rather than beside it. The Nine Arch Bridge, 91 metres of stone built without steel during the First World War. And a working tea factory, where the leaf goes from withering trough to grading table.
If your itinerary has any flexibility, two nights in Ella is a far better use of the same money and removes eight hours in a car. If it does not — and for a lot of beach-based trips it does not — this is the day that gets you there.
