Full description
Galle Fort takes about two hours to see and most visitors never get past it, which means they miss the country directly behind the town — paddy land, cinnamon smallholdings, rubber, and a network of lanes with almost no traffic on them.
This ride uses those lanes. It is flat to gently undulating, so it does not require any particular fitness, and the pace is set by the group rather than by a schedule. You pass through villages where the ride is unremarkable enough that nobody performs for it: people at their gates, children going to school, a temple, a shop, a man peeling cinnamon under an awning.
The guide stops where stopping is worth it — a cinnamon plot, a paddy field being worked, a lagoon with birds on it, and a stretch where the lanes come out onto the coast and you can see the surf.
Four hours including the stops, back before the heat peaks. It is the best half-day available in Galle for anyone who has already walked the fort and wants to see what is behind it.
