Udawalawe sits almost exactly halfway between the south coast and Ella, which makes the transfer day the sensible time to see it. Doing it as a return day trip from either end means five hours of driving for three hours in the park; doing it on the way costs you nothing extra in road time.
The safari is optional here, and that is a genuine choice rather than an upsell. If wildlife is not why you came, the transfer without it is a shorter, cheaper day and still passes through good country. If it is, Udawalawe is the most dependable elephant park in Sri Lanka: around six hundred resident animals on open grassland where there is nowhere for them to hide.
After the park the road begins to climb, and the change is abrupt. Within an hour you go from dry lowland scrub at thirty-two degrees to tea slopes at a thousand metres and fifteen degrees cooler. Ravana Falls, a broad cascade beside the road below Ella, is the last stop before the town.
You arrive in Ella in the late afternoon with your first hill-country morning free for Little Adam's Peak at dawn.
