Full description
Mirissa and Weligama sit at the end of the south coast strip, and Ella is about four hours inland. Udawalawe is almost exactly on the line between them, which makes the transfer day the right day to see it rather than a return trip from either end.
The safari is genuinely optional here. If wildlife is not the reason you came, the transfer without it is a shorter and cheaper day that still passes through good country. If it is, Udawalawe is the dependable park: created in 1972 around a new reservoir, with the displaced farmland now open grassland and around six hundred resident elephants that have nowhere to hide. Sightings are near-certain rather than lucky.
After the park the road turns north and begins to climb, and the change is fast — from dry lowland scrub at thirty-two degrees to tea slopes at a thousand metres and fifteen degrees cooler, in a little over an hour.
Ravana Falls, a broad cascade beside the road below Ella, is the last stop before the town.
You arrive in the late afternoon with your first Ella morning free, which is the right way round: Little Adam's Peak wants a dawn start and you will have had one.
