Full description

The continental shelf drops away unusually close to shore off Mirissa, which is why the deep-water species come near enough to reach in a morning. Blue whales feed in these waters, along with sperm whales, Bryde's whales and large pods of spinner dolphins, and turtles surface regularly on the way out. It is one of the more reliable places in the world to see the largest animal that has ever lived.

Boats leave the harbour at first light, when the sea is at its flattest and the blows are easiest to spot against the horizon. The crew has been working this water for years and reads the birds and the surface as much as the GPS. Sightings are never promised — these are wild animals in open ocean — but the crew will keep looking for the length of the trip rather than turning back the moment the schedule allows.

You are out for roughly two to four hours depending on where the animals are that morning. Breakfast and tea are served on board, which matters more than it sounds when you have left before dawn. Life jackets are provided and the crew runs a safety briefing before departure.

There is an etiquette to this that responsible operators follow: approaching from behind and to the side, keeping engines steady, and not cutting across a whale's path. If the crew holds back from a sighting, that is why.

Season matters. The southern coast is at its best for whale watching roughly from November through April, when the sea is calmest and sightings are most frequent; during the south-west monsoon the water is rougher and trips are more often cancelled. If you are prone to seasickness, take something the night before as well as on the morning — the swell offshore is real, and a queasy passenger sees nothing.

Highly recommended. The crew did a great job, so we even made another optional stop on the return trip. You could also ask them a lot of questions. We were very lucky and even got to see a blue whale.

I would absolutely recommend this package. We had heard from a lot of people that whale sightings have become quite rare these days, so spotting them not once but twice felt unreal — and it was a blue whale. It was an absolutely amazing experience. We also got to see a lot of spinner dolphins along the way. Maybe we were just lucky with the whale sightings, but overall this was a 10/10 experience for me. We started at 7 AM, and until around 10 AM there were no sightings at all, so we had almost lost hope. But the guides kept trying continuously to make sure we got the experience we came for. After 10 AM, things completely turned around and we had an incredible time. We were back by around 12:30 PM. They mention it as a 4-hour trip, but it does go on a little longer — and honestly, I have absolutely no complaints about that.

Great! Guides were amazing and our driver. We were super happy and lucky to see so many pods of dolphins !! Unfortunately no whales , missed out by a day! But it’s off season. All boats kept great distance from the pods and we loved the snacks throughout. Great !!

It was an amazing experience. Our guides were very much determined to show us the whales even after it became hopeless, and went an extra mile to show us.

We had a great experience overall with this whale & dolphin watching tour! Although we didn’t spot any whales this time, we were lucky to see a large number of dolphins, which was still an amazing sight and made the trip totally worthwhile. A special shoutout to Geeth — he was absolutely fantastic! Friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure everyone was comfortable and engaged throughout the trip. His energy and effort really stood out and made the experience even better. The team was well-organized, and everything ran smoothly from pickup to the boat ride. Even without the whales, it was a memorable outing thanks to the dolphins and the excellent crew. Would definitely recommend, and hopefully next time the whales show up! 🐬✨

We had an amazing morning seeing lots of bottlenose and spinner dolphins and also a few glimpses of a Bryde whale. The staff looked after us really well, plenty of snacks and drinks and they even let us drive the boat! The team were also really helpful organising a taxi to take us/drop us back to Hikkaduwa.

Great, we were able to see whales and dolphins. The only downside was that the boat was completely overcrowded. For many visitors, there were only thin mats on the floor instead of seats.

Didn't see whales, but saw a LOT of dolphins. Worth it!
