Full description
The coast road south of Colombo strings together most of what people picture when they think of Sri Lanka's south-west: fishing villages, coconut estates, river mouths and the long line of the Indian Ocean on your right. This trip runs the whole stretch from Negombo down to Bentota and back, with three stops that between them cover wildlife, conservation and one of the finest gardens in South Asia.
The first stop is Kosgoda, where hatcheries collect eggs from the beach and release the young turtles after they emerge. Five species nest along this coast, including green and olive ridley turtles, and the tanks usually hold rescued adults as well. It is a short visit, and a straightforward one — you see the eggs, the hatchlings and the reason so many do not make it on their own.
Then comes the Madu Ganga. This is a shallow brackish lagoon studded with islands and threaded with mangrove tunnels, and you cover it in a small boat for around two hours. The channels narrow until the roots close overhead, monitor lizards sun themselves on the banks, kingfishers work the shallows, and the boatman stops at a cinnamon island where peeling is still done by hand.
The last stop is Lunuganga, the country estate that the architect Geoffrey Bawa spent five decades reshaping. It is the clearest statement of what became known as tropical modernism — terraces, framed views, borrowed landscape and a hill that Bawa had cut back so the lake would read properly from the terrace. Even if you have no interest in architecture, it is a beautiful place to walk.
This is a ten-hour day with roughly four and a half hours of driving in it. It is well paced but it is long, and you will be back in Negombo in the evening rather than mid-afternoon.

Traveler Reviews
We thoroughly enjoyed this trip. We were picked up promptly by our own driver. He was very knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the day. It was a perfect way to explore the sights of Bentota.
The tour was very entertaining. The boat tour through the mangroves of Madu Ganga was the best. The guide was friendly and helpful. When tipping the locals, however, he let me walk into the knife a bit and in the end I lost a proud sum. Please be careful when tipping! It is best to inquire beforehand what is customary in the country. inexperience
