Full description
Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and, for most of the year, the quietest of the big ones. Its name means "land of lakes", and the park is built around villus: shallow natural depressions that fill with rainwater and pull animals out of the dry scrub jungle to drink. That is the logic of a day here. You do not chase animals across open plains as you might in Yala; you work a circuit of waterholes and wait, and the sightings you get are earned rather than queued for.
The day runs from six in the morning to six in the evening, which is a genuinely long stretch in an open jeep. It is also why the trip works. Leopards move at the edges of the day, and being inside the park at first light and again in the last hour before the gates close doubles your chances compared with a half day.
Wilpattu holds a healthy leopard population, and sloth bear sightings are more likely here than almost anywhere else on the island, particularly in June and July when the palu fruit ripens. Elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, mugger crocodiles in the villus and a long list of resident and migrant birds fill the hours in between. Nothing is guaranteed, and any operator who promises a leopard is guessing.
Your driver and tracker read the park by habit: fresh pug marks on the sand track, alarm calls from deer or langur. Sitting still at a villu for twenty minutes is often what separates a sighting from a drive-past.
Pickup is available from Negombo, Anuradhapura or Galkadawala, with drop-off at any of the three. Bring more water than you think you need, a hat, and a camera with a long lens if you have one. Dust is constant and the tracks are rough; this is a rewarding day but not a gentle one.

Traveler Reviews
Our guide was BRILLANT. At 21 she was knowledgeable about the animals and park but also so great to talk to about all things Sri Lanka, evolution of culture, language, social roles etc. We were lucky and had x 2 spotting of leopards, all 3 types of monkeys, water buffalo’s, many beautiful birds, deers, crocodiles, turtle, lyre birds, mongoose, reptiles etc. We did not see elephants on the tour as they are currently hanging on a part of the park inaccessible by jeep. However, could see them when leaving by the lake. Worth noting, the booking included binoculars, however, our guide was not advised so she had to source some from another car, which was disappointing, as these are needed. Overall excellent ethical trip and opportunity to see these animals doing their thing in the wild.
Fantastic experience. Great guide and driver, showing us a range of beautiful spots away from all the other cars. We saw a wide range of animals - eagles, crocodiles, elephants, water buffalo, peacocks, deers and many more! Sadly didn’t see leopards and bears, but this is normal and not the responsibility of our guide and driver, this is still nature and animals want to avoid humans. Can highly recommend!!
We had the best day! We saw every animal we wanted and our guide was very friendly and told us a lot information about the animals. Our driver was very experienced and guided us through the park. We even got to see the beach, a place not all tours are able to cover.
We had a very nice day with the live guide Avishka and the driver Udare. We saw many different species of animals in their natural habitat and sometimes also very close up. We saw everything from a snake to a leopard or a bird. The round-trip ground transportation (if you choose to be picked up) was very punctual (to the minute, but if you indicate that you still need to go to the bathroom or something else, that's also possible). All in all, only one word is needed to describe this experience and service: amazing!
That was a great experience! We had the best guide, who is very experienced and enthusiastic, and we saw many different animals. In fact, we saw all the coolest animals within the first 6-8 hours, so I wouldn't book the 12-hour tour again. The pick-up and drop-off were also very convenient. Bring your cameras with good zoom, if possible!
We had a wonderful day in Wilpattu national park. Our guide Kaushika and driver Maduranga picked us up in the morning as agreed. They were both very friendly and spotted a lot of animals thay we couldn't see. Kaushika was very knowledgeable of Sri Lankan animals and other animals as well. We had a lot of discussions about animals, culture and many other things. We enjoyed decent readily-made breakfast and lunch in the car. Also we stopped during the day at a site by a lake where you could visit the toilet and enjoy the view [take your items with you from the car or the monkeys will steal them :)]. We saw a lot of animals and we were lucky to see leopards actually thrice. First was just a glimpse in the bush but second time it was walking towards for quite a while on a road. Third was just laying down on a grassy field, very majestic. Mornings are cold, take a jacket with you. Sometimes you might get bored waiting for an animal to show up so it is best to go with good company. :)
We had a great day with Tiger Safari. Guides (Kaushika) were polite, friendly and informative. Breakfast and lunch were simple and tasty. Vehicle was very comfortable, considering how rough the tracks are. We were lucky enough to see leopard and sloth bear. Definitely recommend :)
And we really enjoyed the trip. Our guides were super friendly and told us all about the plants and animals in Wilpattu National Park. We were very lucky and saw a leopard and a sloth bear. We highly recommend this tour.
We had a great time with the family on this safari! Even though we didn't get to see any leopards, our guide really went out of their way to give us the best experience possible. We still got to see a ton of animals: buffalo, deer, elephants, crocodiles, birds, and all kinds of lizards. 😍 The food was yummy and the portions were really generous!
I had an amazing full day safari - managed to see elephants, a leopard, sloth bear, mongoose, monkeys, too many birds to count - everything the park had to offer! A special mention must be made of my guide Ishara Iakmal who was a wealth of information and so much fun. The driver Supun Maduranga had the eyes of a hawk! I doubt I would have seen so much with his knowledge of the park and ability to spot animals when camouflaged. Also the food provided was great! I truly lucked out on this tour, can't rate them highly enough.
