Full description
Horton Plains is 32 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya and the trip only works at dawn, which makes it awkward to combine with anything else. This version solves that by not returning: you walk the plateau in the morning and are then driven on to Haputale or Ella, with your luggage in the car.
The plateau sits at around 2,300 metres and is unlike the rest of the country — montane grassland and cloud forest, wind-scoured, cold, with dwarfed trees hung with moss.
World's End is the reason to be there: the southern escarpment ends and the ground falls about 870 metres in a sheer face. It faces south, warm air rises off the plain through the morning, and by nine or ten there is a cloud where the view should be. That single fact is why the gate opens at six and why this trip starts at five.
The loop is nine kilometres and three to four hours, walked anticlockwise so World's End comes before the cloud and Baker's Falls comes on the way back.
Then the drive on, which drops from 2,300 metres to a thousand and about twelve degrees warmer.
