Full description
Horton Plains only works at dawn, and that single fact shapes this whole day.
World's End faces south. Warm air rises off the plain through the morning, and by nine or ten the cliff is inside a cloud with nothing visible at all. The gate opens at six, which means leaving Nuwara Eliya at five, and there is no flexible version of that.
The plateau sits at around 2,300 metres and is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka — montane grassland and cloud forest, wind-scoured and cold, with dwarfed trees hung with moss. The loop is nine kilometres and three to four hours, walked anticlockwise so World's End comes before the cloud and Baker's Falls comes on the return.
With the trek finished by late morning, the rest of the day fills with the things that do not need an early start: a working tea factory taking the leaf from withering trough to grading table, and Ravana Falls on the road down towards Ella.
Twelve hours in total, which sounds long and does not feel it, because the demanding part is over by eleven.
