Full description
This is a transfer rather than a tour that returns you where it started, and that is its usefulness. If you are moving from the hill country down to Kandy anyway, this turns a road you would otherwise sleep through into the day's sightseeing.
The A5 between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy is one of the better drives in Sri Lanka. It leaves Nuwara Eliya at around 1,900 metres, where the British planted their hill station and where the climate still supports the cool-weather vegetables and roses that make the town feel oddly transplanted, then descends through the tea belt in a long series of switchbacks.
Tea is the reason the road exists. After coffee blight destroyed the earlier plantations in the 1870s, the highlands were replanted with tea, and the estates that line this route still work the same slopes. A factory visit on the way explains withering, rolling, oxidation and firing, and ends with a tasting; it is one of the few plantation stops in the country that is genuinely informative rather than a shop with a view.
Ramboda Falls drops in two tiers beside the road partway down and is an easy stop, as is the Gregory Lake area if you have time before leaving Nuwara Eliya. The Hindu temple at Ramboda and a handful of viewpoints over the valleys fill out the rest.
You are dropped at your Kandy hotel at the end. Around six hours covers the drive plus the stops, and your driver can adjust which ones you make. Bring warm layers for the start; Nuwara Eliya mornings are genuinely cold by Sri Lankan standards.

Traveler Reviews
I have traveled to many countries, but this guide was the most polite and friendly. When we asked detailed questions, they provided a lot of information, and when we took pictures, they did their utmost to ensure we got good shots. Thanks to that, I was able to take a lot of very good photos. If there was a scenic spot that interested me, he would stop along the way and let me take a photo. Maybe it was just that I got a lucky guide, but I highly recommend it. I also think it's a very good excursion for traveling from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy with luggage.
Tharanga made my journey from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy absolutely seamless and memorable. He was punctual, professional, and incredibly friendly from the start. His driving was smooth and safe, which made navigating the winding hill roads feel easy and relaxing. What really stood out was how understanding and accommodating he was, he took the time to tailor the trip to my preferences, making the experience feel truly personal. Whether it was stopping at scenic viewpoints, adjusting the pace, or sharing local insights, he went above and beyond to make sure I enjoyed every moment. He consistently checked in to make sure I was at ease. I highly recommend Tharanga. An exceptional experience from start to finish!
Terence is a knowledgeable, friendly guide. He showed me some very beautiful places, and the journey was safe. I can wholeheartedly recommend the tour to others.
Danushka was amazing and took us to a number of interesting locations - the tea factory and gem museum were particularly good! We stopped for mango and Sri Lankan snacks along the way which made the journey very authentic. Just note, while the sites are free, the owners watch over you to get you to buy their products. There is no obligation to do so, as Danushka highlighted, but we felt a little awkward leaving some of the sites empty handed.
The tour was really nice. We saw a lot, and our guide Danushka really tried to show us everything. He was super patient and stopped everywhere to take photos. Thanks for this lovely day. :-)
A very good day throughout the Nuwara Eliya area, Danushka was our guide and was attentive to everything we needed, thanks to him the experience was very good.
This tour if missed would be a lifetime regret. Had wonder time in Nuwara Eliya, our captain Danushka helped us a lot and guided well. Our ride was comfortable and enjoyed music all over the route.
A wonderful day with a wonderful guide and driver - Danushka. As a person who places emphasis on customer satisfaction Danushka was extremely accommodating and flexible in meeting the needs of our customised tour. This is a great tour as we were able to travel the scenic road route to Nuwara Eliya and return. On route we stopped at local restaurant as well as taking in the sights as outlined in the itinerary. Time was no issue for Danushka who was extremely patient. An excellent tour. Thank you Danushka. We wish you well for future tours. A job well done - Peter and Merlinda
Great day with driver Channa! He stopped at many viewpoints along the way and customised the itinerary to my liking!
