Full description

Nuwara Eliya to Ella is only about two hours of driving, which makes it the easiest transfer in the hill country and the one most worth padding with stops.

Gregory Lake sits at the centre of Nuwara Eliya, built under British governor Sir William Gregory in 1873, and it is where the town takes its evening walk. Around it the hill station survives largely intact — a racecourse, a golf course, a post office in mock Tudor, and hedges.

Hakgala, ten kilometres south, is the second of Sri Lanka's great botanic gardens after Peradeniya, laid out in 1861 originally to grow cinchona for quinine and later tea. At 1,700 metres it grows what the lowlands cannot: roses, tree ferns, cypress and a large orchid collection, and the blue magpies here come to visitors.

The Seetha Amman temple next door is a Ramayana site, brightly painted in the south Indian style and busy with Indian pilgrims. Sita is said to have been held in this valley, and there are depressions in the rock across the stream that are pointed out as Hanuman's footprints.

You reach Ella in the afternoon with the day's sightseeing already done.

Ella is a village at 1,040 metres in the southern hill country, reached by the train from Kandy that most people rate the finest railway journey in Asia, and its sights are all within a few kilometres: the Nine Arch Bridge, a brick viaduct of 1921 in a gorge of tea, which a train crosses several times a day; Little Adam's Peak, a 40-minute walk through tea to a ridge; Ella Rock, a harder three-hour climb; and Ravana Falls on the road down to Wellawaya. Mornings are clear and afternoons in the wet months bring cloud into the gap, so the walks are done early. Tuk-tuks are the transport, and every guesthouse can find one.
