Full description
If you have just come off the Ella train at Nanu Oya, this is how you get to Kandy without wasting the afternoon. Pickup can be from the station itself, which makes it the natural continuation of the rail journey rather than a separate arrangement.
The road drops from 1,900 metres through the estates, and the first stop is a working tea plantation — not just the factory but the field, where you can watch pluckers taking the two leaves and a bud that everything else depends on. The factory visit that follows makes sense of what you have just seen: withering, rolling, oxidation, firing, and a grading table where one leaf becomes six products.
Ramboda Falls is the halfway mark, a 100-metre drop a few minutes' walk from the road, with a temple above it.
The rest of the descent is viewpoints — the road cuts across the hillside with the valley opening below, and there are two or three places worth stopping that a bus would drive past. You reach Kandy in the afternoon.
