Full description
Nuwara Eliya to the Yala area drops from 1,900 metres to sea level over about five hours, and Ella sits almost exactly halfway. Stopping there rather than driving past is the difference between a transfer and a day.
The route leaves the tea country and descends through Bandarawela and Ella, where the landscape opens through the Ella Gap towards the southern plain. The Nine Arch Bridge is the main stop: 91 metres of stone viaduct 24 metres above a gorge, built during the First World War in solid masonry because the steel earmarked for it went to Europe.
Ella Rock is on the itinerary for those who want it, though it is a three-hour return walk on unmarked ground and adding it turns this into a very long day — most people take the bridge and the falls and leave the walk for a stay rather than a transfer.
Ravana Falls, a broad cascade beside the road below Ella, is the last hill-country stop before the descent onto the plain.
You arrive at Tissamaharama or the Yala area in the late afternoon, in time to settle before a dawn game drive the next morning.
