Full description

This is a 9-hour experience from Chiang Mai, built around Joy Elephant Sanctuary and Mae Wang District. It is run by Joy Elephant Sanctuary, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Arashiyama, on Kyoto's western edge, is the bamboo grove, the Togetsukyo bridge over the Katsura river, the gardens of Tenryu-ji and the monkey park on the hill above. The bamboo path is about 500 metres and is photographed empty in every guidebook because those photographs are taken before 7:30; by mid-morning it is a procession. Rickshaw runs, the Sagano scenic railway along the gorge, and boat rides down the Hozu rapids all start here. Autumn colour peaks in the second half of November and cherry blossom around the first week of April.

The price covers 1. Round trip transfer service to/from all places of, 2. English-Speaking Tour Guide, 3. Complimentary Local Meal, 4. Drinking Water and 5. Elephant's Food & Snacks. It does not cover 1. Accommodation, 2. Other personal expenses and 3. Tips and gratuities, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Mueang Chiang Mai District. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Joy Elephant Sanctuary before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

The whole day as a full was extremely enjoyable. Seeing the elephants clearly happy and comfortable in an ethical sanctuary was exactly what we wanted when we booked the excursion. The guides were helpful, funny and spoke great English throughout the day and I couldn’t recommend this place more. The water rafting was also a great experience, the person controlling our raft was professional and the views on the river were beautiful. All round and great day for a reasonable price.

We had a really fun day! We learned a lot about elephants and got to feed and walk with them. The trip to the waterfall was refreshing followed by a satisfying lunch. The bamboo raft river float was a relaxing way to end the day. Be advised the forest walk with the elephants can be a bit strenuous as you go up then down. Be mindful of your surroundings and the fact that elephants are very large and can move quicker than you. I would recommend this trip!

One of the best things we did in Thailand. All the guides were really friendly and knowledgeable. Could see how well they treated all the elephants. Must do if you’re in chiang Mai

Really loved this place. You can feed the elephants but not touch them, which I actually liked as it feels more respectful to the animals. The guides were great—super friendly and easy to talk to. Bamboo rafting was really fun, and we also got to make something to take home which was a nice extra. Would definitely recommend.

You get so much for the price! And they gave us so much information about the elephants as well as getting to walk alongside them and watch them in their habitat!
