This is a 4-hour experience from Chiang Mai, built around Tuk tuk, Wat Suan Dok and Wat Lok Moli. It is run by TripGuru Thailand, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Japanese food tours work because the best places are small, unmarked and full of regulars, and a guide who orders for you opens them. An izakaya crawl covers yakitori, sashimi, karaage and the local pours of sake, shochu and highballs across three or four counters in an evening; a ramen walk explains the broths, tonkotsu, shoyu, miso and shio, and the regional styles. Most places seat eight to twelve and tours run six to eight guests for that reason. Vegetarians should say so when booking, because dashi stock is fish and hidden in almost everything; halal-certified options exist but are fewer.

Our guide Lily was THE BEST ! She was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and happy to answer any questions. Our tuk tuk driver was friendly and happy. Lily even serenaded us with a Thai song.

Koi was the best company for the evening. The tuk tuk broke down but she got us alternative transport very quickly. Even bought us Thai tea while we were waiting. She is very knowledgeable and introduced us to some very tasty street food. Our first time in Thailand and she gave us a very good introduction.

We enjoyed our tour but had expected more balance between temples and food. We have done a number of traditional food tours where the guide picks out regional specialties for you to choose and you try lots of different things. This one wasn’t like that -we were taken to two street markets and could buy food if we wanted it -the guide did tell us what things were and was very informative though. You also pay for your food that you buy. The temples took up most of the tour -they were beautiful and the guide was extremely knowledgeable. It was good going at night when it was quieter and cooler to
