The two buildings that between them explain modern Abu Dhabi, visited privately rather than on a coach, with a driver and a vehicle to yourselves.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque holds forty thousand people. The main prayer hall has the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world and the courtyard's floral marble inlay is worth as much attention as the domes above it. Entry is free; the abaya women need is provided at the door.

Qasr Al Watan is the working presidential palace and one of very few anywhere open to the public. The Great Hall, the library and the collection of state gifts are included in your ticket, which is part of this booking rather than an extra.

Going privately means the pace is yours. The mosque rewards being lingered in and coach groups rarely allow it.

⚠️ Two closures to work around: the mosque does not admit visitors on Friday mornings, and Qasr Al Watan closes at short notice for state functions. Give us your date and we will confirm both before you pay. Dress rules apply to everyone at the mosque — shoulders and knees covered, nothing sheer or tight.

Our guide Manjinder (Mani) was a bit late to the rendezvous point, but informed us well in advance. Everything went smooth from the moment we met. Mani is very knowledgeable and tells a lot about Abu-Dhabi, the city he obviously loves. The time in Qasr Al Watan and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, 1,5 hours in each, is roughly enough.

One thing worth flagging: we confirm both are open on your date before you pay. It is the detail guests most often miss on this experience, so it is better read now than discovered on the day.
It is enforced at the gate, not loosely. Women need ankle-length, loose clothing with wrists and hair covered; men need long trousers and sleeves.
