Full description
A reconstructed oasis settlement on the breakwater, with a working souq, metalworkers, potters and weavers — and the clearest straight-on view of the Abu Dhabi skyline across the water.
The village is the counterweight to everything else in the city. Abu Dhabi is glass and marble; this is barasti palm-frond shelters, a falaj irrigation channel, a camp and a mosque, laid out as a coastal settlement would have been before oil.
The craftspeople are working rather than performing. The metalworker is making things, the potter's wheel turns, and the weaving is on a loom rather than in a case.
A guide makes the difference here. Without one it reads as a pleasant reconstruction; with one it becomes an explanation of how people actually lived on this coast — where the water came from, how pearling worked, and why the buildings are shaped the way they are.
Entry to the village is free, so what you are paying for is the guiding.
Go late in the afternoon: the light on the skyline across the water is best then, and the craftspeople are still working.
