teamLab are the Tokyo collective who make art you walk into rather than look at, and Phenomena is their Abu Dhabi museum on Saadiyat Island — a purpose-built space in the cultural district alongside the Louvre.

The works here are environmental rather than projected: installations that respond to air currents, water, temperature and the presence of the people moving through them, so no two visits produce the same thing and nothing is on a loop. Some rooms you wade through, some you are surrounded by, and the boundary between one work and the next is deliberately unclear.

Practical things that make the visit better. Wear something you can move in and shoes that come off easily, because several rooms are entered barefoot. Some floors are wet and some spaces are dark with uneven ground — flat shoes, not heels. And mirrored floors are a feature of this kind of work, so skirts and dresses are worth thinking about in advance.

Free locker storage and parking are included with the ticket.

Allow two hours at least. People routinely plan an hour and stay three.

This was one of the best things I’ve ever done I stayed 3&1/2 hours and realllly enjoyed each room. I didn’t just go next next. And I had the strong meditation green tea in the Japanese tea light room 😐 Go go and go it’s amazing

It was an incredible experience, and I’ll be honest it exceeded my expectations, I had such a fun time! But also I’d like to mention how friendly and attentive the staff are I cannot say one bad thing about them. There was one particular member of staff, apologies I didn’t catch the name that explained everything to me and even offered to take pictures and videos of me in the first room. Thank you again for an amazing experience!
