Al Ain sits ninety minutes inland from Dubai on the Omani border, and it is the one Emirati city that was never rebuilt — which makes it the most interesting day trip from Dubai and one almost nobody takes.
The oasis is UNESCO-listed and still working. Around a hundred and fifty thousand date palms are irrigated by falaj, the underground channel system that has run here for three thousand years, and you walk the shaded paths between them while the water moves under your feet.
The camel market is the other reason to come. It is a genuine livestock market where animals are traded by people who breed them, loud and busy and entirely unstaged — not something arranged for visitors.
Then Al Ain Museum and the fort where Sheikh Zayed was born, and the drive up Jebel Hafeet: eleven kilometres of switchbacks to 1,200 metres, regularly called one of the best driving roads in the world, with the whole desert laid out at the top.
The road up Jebel Hafeet at sunset is the part people remember. Ask for the timing that catches it.

Traveler Reviews
If we could give more than five stars, we would. The tour was an absolutely amazing and memorable experience! Not only did we learn so much during the time, but our Egyptian tour guide Ahmed Elshemy and our driver Shafiq really made sure to meet our individual requests and make the tour „ours“. Have done group tours before, not even slightly comparable. Everyone who has the chance to go on this tour should absolutely take it, it was worth every last cent!!
Our guide, who was also the driver was very informative. The only thing we were disappointed about is that the touroperator did not mention that even TWO items had to be skipped from the tour: one museum could not be visited because under construction, the second was the camelmarket that appeared to be closed due Covid in camels. This was already known more than a month ago!
The Oasis was really great. We took a driven buggy because it had a guide but our guide really didn’t say much so if I was to do it again I would hire the much cheaper self cycle bike.
