The two Dubais in one day, seen from the two angles that suit them: the new city from the air, the old one on foot.
The helicopter comes first. Twelve minutes over the Burj Al Arab, the Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Khalifa, which is the only way to see the Palm as the shape it was drawn as rather than a road system.
Then the opposite. Al Fahidi's wind-tower lanes, built by pearl merchants in coral and gypsum, walked at ground level with a guide. The abra across Dubai Creek — the wooden commuter boat that has run the route for decades. The gold and spice souks on the far bank.
The contrast is the argument. From five hundred feet Dubai is a diagram; from a lane in Al Fahidi it is a town that was here long before any of it.
Practical notes. The helicopter is weather-dependent and summer haze moves slots; if the flight is cancelled the walking half still runs. And the walking portion is roughly three hours on foot, so wear shoes for it rather than for the photographs.
