Full description

Al Khayma is the largest of the desert camps and this is the premium ticket to it, which in practice means three separate buffets rather than one queue, a seated area away from the main crush, and enough time to use the camp properly instead of eating and leaving.

The afternoon starts the same way as any good safari: hotel pickup in a 4x4, tyres down at the dune line, and half an hour across the red sand. Sandboarding and a camel ride follow, and there is a falcon at the camp — the bird sits on your glove, which is a better photograph than most people expect.

The three buffets are Emirati, Moroccan and Arabian, each with its own live station, and they run long enough that you are not rushed. Around them the camp has henna, shisha, camel feeding, and the evening's tanoura and fire shows.

Two things worth planning around. The dune bashing is not gentle, so flag any back, neck or motion-sickness concerns at booking. And the desert gets genuinely cold after dark between November and February — the camp is open-sided and a jacket makes the last two hours much better.

Wow, wow, wow! This trip exceeded all our expectations. Our guide, Babar, was friendly, informative and incredibly attentive. He taught us so much about the history and culture of the UAE and made sure we were happy and comfortable throughout the experience. The highlights for me were the dune bashing, quad biking and camel ride. The food was delicious and plentiful, and there were several air-conditioned tents where you could escape the intense heat when needed. My 10-year-old loved every minute of it! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this experience—and especially Babar—to anyone visiting Dubai.
