The evening safari is the one almost everybody does on a first trip to Dubai, and it earns that. A 4x4 collects you from your hotel in the afternoon, deflates its tyres at the edge of the Al Lahbab red dunes, and spends half an hour crossing them — the part people brace for and then ask to repeat.
After the dunes the pace changes completely. You stop for the sunset, which over red sand happens fast and is worth having a camera ready for, then continue to the camp: a short camel ride, sandboarding down a dune, Arabic coffee and dates, henna, and a barbecue under the lights with a tanoura and belly dance show.
Two practical things. The dune bashing is genuinely bumpy — if anyone in your group is pregnant, has a back or neck problem, or gets carsick, say so at booking and the driver will take a gentler line. And bring a layer: the desert loses its heat the moment the sun goes, and people who came out in shorts regret it by nine o'clock.
Pickup is from anywhere in central Dubai and the vehicle is air-conditioned throughout. Quad biking is an add-on rather than part of the base tour, so choose it at the option stage if you want it.
