Self-drive across the red dunes on either a quad bike or a dune buggy — you pick which at the option stage — with an instructor leading and the usual desert extras around it.

The choice matters more than people expect. A quad is ridden like a motorbike, you are exposed, and it is the more physical of the two. A buggy has a roll cage, a seat and a wheel, and is the easier option for anyone nervous or riding with a passenger.

Around the drive: sandboarding, a short camel ride you can repeat, a falcon for photographs, and a photo stop on a ridge.

This is the shorter, cheaper end of the desert market — no camp dinner, no evening shows, just the driving and the dunes. That suits people who want the desert without giving up a whole evening, and anyone who found the standard six-hour safari's camp portion the dullest part.

The 30-minute ride was just right — enough time to enjoy the scenery in the middle of the desert. Big thanks for the refreshments, especially helpful with the intense summer heat! And our tour guide could speak French — merci Momo!
