Fossil Rock is a jebel out past Al Madam, an hour or so from Dubai, and the sand around it is a different colour and a different consistency from the red dunes the standard safaris use.
The rock is what it sounds like: a limestone outcrop full of marine fossils, laid down when this whole region was under a shallow sea. You can pick up shells and coral fragments from ground that is now the driest place most visitors have ever stood, which is a better reason to be in a desert than a buffet.
The buggies are the way across. You drive, with a guide leading and a briefing first, over dunes that are firmer and steeper than the tourist stretches closer to town.
This suits people who have done a standard safari and wanted more driving and fewer shows — there is no camp evening here, no tanoura, no queue for a buffet. It is a drive and a landscape.
⚠️ Physical and very dusty. Closed shoes, sunglasses, and clothes you do not mind ruining. Not one to book with back or neck trouble.
