Across the country to the other coast, which is the day trip that surprises people most.

The road leaves the Dubai flats, crosses through Al-Madam and into the Hajar mountains, and comes out on the Gulf of Oman — green water, no towers, and mountains dropping straight to the shoreline. It passes Dibba, Kalba and Sharjah's east-coast enclaves on the way.

Stops include the Fujairah Museum, with Bronze Age finds from settlements along this coast, the Heritage Museum, and Khor Fakkan beach, which curves under the hills and is the photograph everyone takes home.

Eight hours door to door and a fair amount of that is driving — that is the honest trade, and what you get for it is the half of the Emirates that no Dubai itinerary includes.

Bring swimwear. The water on this side is calm and clear in a way the Dubai coast is not, and the beach stop is wasted without it.

We went on a tour with Akbar and it was fantastic. We made lots of stops and saw a lot. We could decide for ourselves how long we wanted to stay at any time. Akbar also took photos of us. I highly recommend this tour.
