Full description

A night on Bai Tu Long, the bay that licensing keeps quiet.

There are three bays in this UNESCO landscape and they are one continuous drowned karst divided by administration, not geology. Ha Long proper carries almost the whole cruise fleet. Bai Tu Long runs northeast towards the Chinese border, and the number of boats permitted to work it is capped, so it stays genuinely empty in a way Ha Long has not been for twenty years.

The name is part of a pair. Ha Long means descending dragon, the mother sent down to defend Vietnam whose spat jade became the islands. Bai Tu Long is where her children came down after her.

Thien Canh Son cave sits on a small island reached by a short climb, and it is the reason the route goes this way: stalactite chambers that receive a handful of boats a day rather than the queue that forms at Sung Sot in the main bay.

Vung Vieng is a floating fishing village, families living on rafts with fish pens beneath them, worked by rowing boat rather than engine so the visit stays quiet.

Kayaking happens off the boat in sheltered water between the karsts, which is how you get into the low openings a cruise hull cannot enter.

The overnight is what makes it. Day boats leave in the late afternoon and return after dawn, and Bai Tu Long starts emptier than Ha Long to begin with.
